open to some unknowns

open to some unknowns was my first solo exhibition, held as part of the international freedom festival, a juneteenth celebration in olean, new york. (read more about how i became involved with the festival here.)

because i could not attend in person, our family made a nine-minute video showcasing the knitting projects in this exhibit, some of which traveled to olean, and some of which were shown in photographs (there was no way to separate claudia from her claudia/mommy doll, nor béla from his poongmul robot).

the video also featured some knitting not included in the exhibit itself, but slideshow below represents the work that defined the exhibit and this period of work.

a promotional flyer. many people in olean were unfamiliar with QR code technology and so it was demonstrated with this advertisement, during the festival, by verizon.

the “cameroonian” hat, which was inspired by the men’s crocheted hats of cameroon. i first saw such hats at the textile museum in washington, DC. the hat was finished in autumn 2009.

a freeform tunic with some freeform movement. more wearable than expected! additional information

this joomchi tunic was made for claudia, but she outgrew it before she got to wear it — as it was the first piece i’d ever had exhibited, and it made a good tour of korea before we got it back. It was shown as part of Korea and America Joomchi, at heyri artist village, kyonggido, korea, in 2010, and at the cheongju craft museum, in 2011.

béla’s knitted poongmulbot — a “robot” who is also a traditional korean drummer.
